Why Sandblasting Produces a Better Engraving on Glass Than Laser

When it comes to engraving glass — whether it's a custom award, a personalized gift, or a commemorative piece — not all methods are created equal. While laser engraving has become the industry standard for many materials, it falls short when applied to glass. At Axiom Design & Engraving, we use sandblasting for glass work, and here's why it makes all the difference.
The Problem With Laser Engraving on Glass
Laser engravers work by directing an intense beam of heat onto a surface. On most materials, this produces clean, precise results. Glass, however, doesn't respond well to heat. When a laser hits glass, it causes micro-fractures along the engraved area, resulting in a rough, frosted look that can appear uneven or flaky up close. The edges of the design often lack sharpness, and the finish can feel brittle to the touch.
For a product that's meant to be displayed, gifted, or used to recognize someone's achievement, that level of quality simply isn't good enough.
Why Sandblasting Is Superior
Sandblasting works differently. Instead of heat, it uses a high-pressure stream of abrasive media to carve into the glass surface. The result is a smooth, deep, consistent etch with crisp edges and a clean frosted appearance that catches the light beautifully.
The depth of the engraving is also more controllable with sandblasting. We can create dimension and texture that laser engraving can't replicate — especially important for logos, detailed artwork, or decorative designs.
The finish speaks for itself: sandblasted glass looks professional, intentional, and lasting.

One of the Few Shops That Does It Right
Sandblasting requires more skill, more equipment, and more time than running a laser — which is why most engraving shops don't offer it. At Axiom, we've invested in the process because we believe the quality of the final product matters. When you order a glass award or personalized glass gift from us, you're getting a result that stands apart from what you'd find at a typical print shop or online retailer.
If you want glass engraving done the right way, we'd love to help. Contact us for a quote or to discuss your project.
